Active families

It’s easy for kids (and parents!) to get into the habit of spending their spare time sitting down – watching TV, playing computer games, listening to their MP3 players – but active kids are healthy kids! It’s important for them to be active so that they grow and develop properly with strong muscles and bones.

Physical activity can help kids maintain a healthy weight – especially important these days when more than a third of children in Northern Ireland are overweight or obese.

Active children also tend to do better at school, and activity is also good for their mental health, helping them to deal with stress better.

The younger you can establish the habit of being active in your children the better, but it’s never too late to start. Children need more physical activity than adults – at least 60 minutes every day. However, just like adults, they can accumulate this amount in several smaller chunks of 10 to 15 minutes.
